PLANNET CARES FOUNDATION VISITS CITY OF REFUGE

On May 4, 2021, members of the PlanNet Cares Foundation Executive Board visited City of Refuge, a women’s and children’s shelter located in Atlanta, GA. City of Refuge is located in the middle of one of Atlanta’s most historic and struggling neighborhoods where nearly 40% of the residents live below the Federal Poverty Level. They help women and children who are in crisis receive food, housing and emergency healthcare while teaching them new skills so they can thrive in their community. The shelter is 24 years old and houses 200 occupants per night, with over 8,000 requests for entry per year.

1. Where were you born and raised; current city; family; hobbies; past business highlights...
I was born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee. I am the mother of six, three boys and three girls. I have always been in customer service and sales. I am currently a One-Star Director.

2. How have you grown or personally developed since joining PlanNet?
I have grown tremendously both mentally and emotionally since being in this business. My mindset has changed completely. I have always had a passion for helping others, and this business has really allowed me to do what I love. Funny story – when I was getting out into the working world, I would take job assessments, and they would always say I should be a travel agent. Never in a million years did I think I would become a travel business owner with the opportunity to help change people's lives. This is truly what I am supposed to be doing in my life.

3. What drives you; what motivates you?
My children most definitely motivate and drive me to become the person I am supposed to be. I am on a mission to show them that there is more in life than just working and growing old and retiring. Of course, my team drives me to be a better leader each and every day. They trusted me to bring them into this business and it is my duty to make sure that everyone who wants to succeed, does succeed.

4. Who would you consider a role model and why?
Coach Natalie Graham, because I can relate to her; her story is very similar to mine. She has accomplished the level of success that I want to accomplish. She is very transparent and real when she speaks. She truly cares for others and their success. She is truly an inspiration and sets the example that I will lead by.

5. The three words that describe you best are:
Caring, motivated and go-getter.

6. If you had some sound advice to give to anyone what would it be?
Be your best self everyday. You are in control of your destiny.

7. What does your life look like five years from now?
I will be living my best life as a full-time entrepreneur. I will be a Six-Star Director and a documented millionaire.

Growing up first-generation American with parents of Caribbean descent, McDonough always had a love for culture and travel and knew a career in those fields would one day be in her future. Having traveled to over ten countries before the age of 25, she couldn’t help but notice the few faces of color she encountered on her monthly excursions and decided to do something about it. 

Launching Melanin on the Map, a safe space for travelers of color to learn, engage and create affordable travel/ income opportunities, McDonough aims to change the face of minority travel.

“My travel experiences have been amazing. I’ve been to Tulum, St. Lucia, Panama, Puerto Rico and the list goes on! This year will be even more of an adventure as I want to visit Ghana and Greece.

“I am achieving success in PlanNet Marketing by staying coachable, asking God for guidance and praying for my team and our business. I read personal development books, applying those books to my business and my life. Staying plugged in is a MUST, and I NEVER EVER give up on my business just because someone said no. You have to decide to commit to your business even when you don’t want to, even when you get rejected and even when life is happening. I love spending time with my family and friends, making as many memories as possible. 

“I have always had a passion for travel. I lived in Dubai for two years, and Sydney, Australia for two years, six months before returning to the UK in 2012. I have visited 29 countries with my main aim to visit as many as possible. Both Rob and I have always loved building our knowledge of the world, and the best part is now we get to share these experiences and travel with our children.
